The works involved excavation of waste flanks in order to gain access to the perimeter cell side wall liner. Once the side wall liner was located and exposed a perimeter ditch was constructed following the levels of the side wall. When low points were identified Leachate and Gas collection sumps designed by ourselves and an outside source were installed with the required pipe work to the ditch. The ditch was backfilled with tyre shred and the first 20 metres of 1:2.5 waste batter was re-installed and covered with a 250mm protection layer.

A pozidrain strip material was installed to encourage the flow of perched Leachate into the perimeter system. On completing this installation a 2.0mm DRS HDPE welded membrane was installed as a permanent capping system.

The contract proved very challenging as we were entering a site where various other contractors had previously tried to install control system’s without success. The permanent system installed works extremely well controlling the high flow of Leachate to the plant rather than escaping the site boundary.
