CAPPING AND RESTORATION OF CELL 12,13 AND 14

After carrying out clay capping works on Cell 13 in summer 2011, Pope plant Ltd was appointed principal contractor for the capping and restoration of Cell 12, 13 and 14 at Colnbrook Landfill in April 2012.

The works were carried out in two phases totalling 20 weeks work.

The earthworks in phase 1 involved placement and preparation of 70’000m2 of regulation layer. An engineered clay cap was installed to 25’000m2 under CQA supervision from White Young Green consultants, employed for the project by Biffa Waste Services. The consultant also carried out the conformance testing for the site derived clay material on a subcontractor basis to Pope Plant Ltd. The area was then restored to a 1 metre depth comprising subsoil/topsoil.

Phase 2 of the works involved the drilling of 52 new gas wells and 5 new leachate wells carried out by Magpie drilling on a subcontractor basis to Pope Plant ltd. During the drilling works Pope Plant Ltd installed 45’000m2 of GCL and restored with 1 metre of soils. Upon completion of restoration, PE Pipe Technologies Ltd, subcontracted to Pope Plant carried out connecting the newly drilled well’s to the Biffa gas extraction system.

During the two phases of work, Pope Plant encountered some very wet conditions which made the work tough going. Although the site was totally capped by early Dec 12, some restoration work requires completing by Pope Plant spring 2013.

“The works were completed ahead of schedule with a small team whom were all very professional, with a very strong focus on Health and Safety it was important to me that all the relevant safety documents were in place, these were presented and supplied in an agreed format on time, good use of PPE from all the staff was also noted through out the works.”

Been a bit of a rush preparing this one
Apart from the hand painted counterweight it’s pretty clean
No time to rub down, fill and spray properly as off to work next week.
Full service inc Hepa filters fitted for the soil treatment facility it’s off to next week in Hertfordshire
Street pads came off nicely leaving like new grousers on the track pads👍
