Cell 6 extension works

Pope Plant Ltd was awarded the Cell 6 extension works at Bellhouse Landfill in April 2012.

The work consisted of several items of preparatory work to proposed capping area in order to receive engineering clay from Cell extension.

The work involved

  • removing waste to active area of landfill to find the tie-in to existing clay cap
  • working carefully around gas infrastructure buried within waste and capping.
  • Cell extension consisted of constructing an access ramp on a steep incline of waste with 0.5m cover of excavated ballast reject material from LaFargeTarmac part of the site. The material was hauled by a separate contractor and placed by our Cat D6R LGP dozer.
  • A pumping system was installed around cell base to keep the ingress of water under control before excavation could begin.
  • the removal of U/S material was required to determine solid clay base before excess clay was removed to capping area
  • Remaining clay was stockpiled for re-use as engineering material consisting of four 250mm layers to achieve 1m depth of engineered base
  • Within the base an existing intercell bund was removed with the reworking of clay underneath the footprint to complete the consistency of engineering from active cell 6 to extension area.
  • One concrete monitoring pad was built before Cell extension handed over to Client to begin tyre bail leachate blanket instalment.

Due to the nature of the work and close relationship with the client it was elected by all parties that the contract be carried out on a day work basis with no hidden costs.

The work was completed to a high standard within the given timescale.

“A pumping system was installed around cell base to keep the ingress of water under control before excavation could begin.”
